Alex Di Mercurio is a Wellington based artist who is notorious for her gorgeously rich and textural paintings.
From early beginnings as an art student Alex had paintings selected and exhibited at The Dowse gallery - now The New Dowse - Lower Hutt, Wellington in 1990. Since then she's exhibited and sold paintings throughout New Zealand, which are now in private collections in New Zealand, France and Australia. More recently her paintings have featured in New Zealand publications, and have also been selected as finalist for national Awards.
With a love of the outdoors and naturalistic philosophy, she is influenced by the radiance of light in nature, focusing on its interplay with colour and shadows in forest settings. Her work is concerned with exploring fleeting moments of reverence in these natural surroundings. The subtle blurring of foliage and branches perfectly capturing that elusive moment of wonderment where all things concurrently become one.
Alexs works are imbued with light, colour and energy. Achieving a unique painterly style where textural impasto paint is complimented by fluid translucent brush strokes, which reveal a multitude of layers of subtler colour underneath. Creating a depth and intensity to each piece.
Born in France 1974 she immigrated to Sydney as a child and later moved to Wellington New Zealand in 1989 which has been her home ever since.
